Hi from Venice — it’s my first time, my first full day, and all quite surreal. I can hear the water taxis cruising down the grand canal from bed, and thought I was on a ship when my alarm sounded. After too much coffee at the breakfast buffet, I still feel a little wobbly.
About a week before I left for Japan, I bought a very small camcorder off a vendor on Portobello Road — “camcorder” is generous, as you’ll see for yourself. It’s been a while since I edited a trip’s worth of clips like this, and I missed it. Low pixels-per-inch aside, I had a nice time with the thing, which even managed to puzzle the famously analogue-loving Japanese who saw me whip it out. I hadn’t test-drived it before travelling, so I’m relieved we got any videos out of it at all.
The goal was to make a home video, so the result is choppy and sans soundtrack, excluding a melodic finale courtesy of some friends we made at an izakaya on our penultimate night.
